BYD Unveils Flagship Atto 8 SUV at Paris Motor Show with 5-Minute “Flash Charging”
PARIS — BYD made major waves at the Paris Motor Show, pulling the wraps off its newest all-electric flagship: the Atto 8. Aimed squarely at large families and long-distance drivers, the imposing seven-seat SUV introduces ground-breaking megawatt charging capabilities designed to fundamentally change the refuelling conversation for electric vehicles.
Measuring 5.04 metres long, 1.96 metres wide, and 1.76 metres tall with a generous 2.95-metre wheelbase, the Atto 8 is larger than a standard Ford Everest, offering a true three-row configuration with plenty of breathing room. Practicality is a core focus: even with all seven seats in use, the vehicle provides flexible cargo space that expands to a massive 1,960 litres with the rear rows folded flat.
Powering Up: 5-Minute Refuels
The headline act of the Atto 8 is its electrical architecture, built around a massive 115 kWh second-generation Blade battery utilising lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistry.
When plugged into one of BYD’s proprietary high-power flash chargers, the vehicle supports megawatt-scale charging speeds. According to the manufacturer, a 10% to 70% top-up takes just 5 minutes—pumping in roughly 390 km (240 miles) of range—while a 10% to 97% refill takes a mere 9 minutes.
BYD also targeted one of the biggest bugbears for EV owners: winter performance. The automaker states that even in freezing conditions down to -30°C (-22°F), a near-full recharge can still be completed in just 12 minutes.
While wider rollout of BYD’s dedicated flash-charging network is just beginning—with 3,000 units slated across Europe by the end of 2027—the Atto 8 is expected to handle conventional 400 kW to 500 kW public fast chargers smoothly, translating to an estimated 10% to 80% charge in around 16 minutes.
Performance and Range
The Atto 8 will be offered in two primary configurations:
- Rear-Wheel Drive (Design): Focused on maximizing distance, delivering an impressive 652 km (405 miles) of WLTP range.
- All-Wheel Drive (Excellence): Packs a dual-motor punch outputting 570 kW (764 horsepower), launching the large SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, with a still-robust WLTP range of 602 km (374 miles).
Inside, the cabin leans heavily into luxury and tech. Features include a 15.6-inch central rotating touchscreen, a massive 2.39m² panoramic glass roof, and heated, ventilated massage seats across the first two rows. Higher trims add a 21-speaker DiSound audio system and a built-in front refrigerator.
Market Outlook
Official European pricing has yet to be finalized, but industry analysts anticipate the Atto 8 to arrive in showrooms starting in early 2027. Positioned above smaller stablemates, it is expected to aggressively undercut legacy European and Asian rivals in the large three-row electric segment.
As production ramps up on BYD’s advanced second-generation Blade batteries, the Atto 8 looks primed to expand beyond Europe into global markets, potentially removing the last major hurdles—charging anxiety and prohibitive pricing—for families looking to make the switch to electric.
